Immediately following on from the advice above, extinguish any naked flames and don't operate any electrical switches (don't switch them on or off). Contact the National Gas Emergency service number - for England, Wales and Scotland this is: 0800 111 999. If the emergency operative in attendance identifies a problem with a gas appliance then this is when you should contact a Gas Safe registered engineer...
In this particular case at a home in West Bridgford, we were quickly able to correct the problem after the residents had followed the precautions above. Having isolated the faulty appliance and repairing, we carried out tests to make sure there was no further escape of gas.
